Position Summary:

The Kitchen Supervisor is responsible for the overall quality and standards of the kitchen operations of the Assisted Living Residence located on the Traditional Territory of the Cowichan Tribes of Duncan, BC, referred to as, "Ts'i'ts'uwatul Lelum". The successful candidate will oversee all food purchasing, food quality, creating low fat, low sugar and low salt meals that are palatable and nutritious for the Residents of Ts’i’ts’uwatul’ Lelum. The Kitchen Supervisor will be responsible for menu planning and rotation, development of Indigenous/First Nations culinary menu options, supervision of kitchen and dining room staff, and maintaining a clean and sanitary kitchen at all times. The Kitchen Supervisor will represent M'akola Housing Society and embrace the vision to improve living conditions for Elders, seniors, people living with disabilities while encouraging and reinforcing traditional practices and cultural beliefs. The incumbent will ensure the Kitchen Supervisor position is represented in a professional, responsible, and respectful way at all times.

Grade 12 Diploma
Post Secondary Culinary Certificate/Cook Red Seal Certificate
Minimum 5 years kitchen experience working in a high volume facility preferably in a congregate/assisted living setting
Minimum 3-5 years kitchen supervisory experience or equivalent training
Current Occupational First Aid, Food Safe- Level 2, and WHMIS Certification
Experience in and with the Indigenous community would be an asset
Criminal Record Check clearance


Required Knowledge and Skills

Directly executing the meals and snacks in accordance with safety and health standards and according to
nutritional guidelines as set out in the Canada Food Guide for Healthy Eating
All Kitchen operations including proper stock rotation procedures and inventory control;
Occupational Health and Safety standards and compliance
Ability to guide, direct and supervise a collaborative team
Demonstrate sound and accurate judgment
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Advanced conflict resolution skills
Strong planning and time management skills
Cultural Safety
Knowledge of the affects of aging
Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to display tact, respect and diplomacy
Ability to take direction and follow procedures
Knowledge to respond effectively and calmly in crisis situations
